Horatio Spafford, the author of this beloved hymn, knows tragedy. His two year old son passed away and the Great Chicago Fire ruined him financially. Soon after, all four of his daughters died on a sinking ship traveling to Europe. His wife survived and sent him the telegram, "Saved alone …". It was then, as Spafford traveled to meet his grieving wife, that he wrote these beloved words we sing.
Like Spafford, we too may know the highest highs and the lowest lows. But whatever our lot, we can rest in the arms of God knowing it is well with our souls.
