How to Play Fish Bowl- A Free and Easy Group Game

This weekend, I played Fish Bowl with six other women and we had a blast. It was an easy game to pull together when none of us remembered to bring another, and we laughed for a solid hour. It would be great for a larger group, too.

To play:

  1. Have every person fill out 3-4 slips of paper with a word/phrase. You can choose randomly, have each person chooses a person, place, or thing, or keep it themed (Christmas, Vacation, etc)
  2. Divide into 2 teams.
  3. Begin Round 1- Taboo style. Team A will select a person to go first, who will try to get their team to guess as many slips as they can in 1 minute using as many words as they want (but not the words on the paper).
  4. Once team A’s minute is up, they add up how many slips of paper they guessed correctly. Then, it’s Team B’s turn. If a team hits the 1 minute mark and the clue has not yet been guessed, it goes back into the bowl. Go back and forth between teams until all the slips of paper have been guessed. Then they all get added back to the bowl.
  5. Round 2- Play again, charades style, where players can only use actions to get their team to guess the word/ phrase, using the same slips of paper as the first round.
  6. Round 3- Players can only use one word.
  7. Team with the most points at the end wins

For example, if the word is “taco”, this is how it could go:

Round 1: Player says "Traditional Mexican food with meat and cheese, served at restaurant with a bell"

Round 2: Player could act out eating a taco.

Round 3: Player might say "Mexican" or "bell" as their one-word clue.

It's a hilarious, easy game that will have everyone giggling!

BONUS ROUNDS:

  • Bonus Round 4: Player has to act out the word under a bed sheet – no talking, only movements!
  • Bonus Round 5: Player uses sound effects to get their team to guess the word – no words or actions allowed.
  • Bonus Round 6: Pictionary style (drawing)
